PARIS, France — Many have seen the now-famous image of Turkish pistol shooter Yusuf Dikeç taking aim at the Paris Olympics.
Dikeç took the internet by storm with his seemingly nonchalant demeanor and style at the games, taking his shots in the 10m Air Pistol Mixed Team competition with one hand in his pocket and an unflappable calm.
Many have noted Dikeç's back-to-basics gear as well. While many Olympic shooters are pictured wearing specialized equipment like blinders or lenses for better precision, a popular image shows Dikeç wearing only a T-shirt and a seemingly normal pair of glasses.
Users on social media quickly turned Dikeç into a sensation, likening the picture to movie characters like John Wick, editing him into iconic scenes or describing him as "Turkey's hitman".
One user edited a cigarette into Dikeç's mouth, saying "If smoking had been allowed in the Olympics he would have won the gold medal".
Some users jokingly speculated that Dikeç had simply been brought into the competition off the street or out of the park.
Other users posted comparisons to Dikeç and the other shooters in the competition, including the Republic of Korea's Kim Yeji, who has also gone viral for her Olympic style, and Serbia's Damir Mikec, who took home the gold medal with his partner Zorana Arunovic.
Did Dikeç win a medal?
So, did Dikeç's technique pay off?
It did. Dikeç and his partner Sevval Ilayda Tarhan won the silver medal in the mixed team 10-meter air pistol shooting competition. According to the Associated Press, it is Turkey's first-ever medal in Olympic shooting.
Despite what some social media users speculated, Dikeç was neither a hitman or simply a random person off the street. AP says he has competed in every Summer Olympics since 2008.
