Here's how Sacramento swimmer Luca Urlando is doing in the Paris Olympics

22-year-old Luca Urlando attended McClatchy High School, the University of Georgia. He's one of the US's top butterfly swimmers.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — There are 131 Californian athletes who qualified for and are heading to Paris for the 2024 Olympic Games. America's Olympic team, Team U.S.A., includes 10 athletes from the Greater Sacramento region.

Here’s a look at swimmer Luca Urlando from Sacramento's results:

  • July 30 - 200m Butterfly Heat 2: Finished 5th at 1:56:18. The top 16 go on in competition. Urlando was 17th.

Urlando, 22, is competing in the men's 200-meter butterfly. He went to CK McClatchy High School and attended the University of Georgia where he holds the record in the 100-yard backstroke, 100 butterfly and 200 butterfly, according to the Olympics. 

He had multiple shoulder injuries within the last few years, including a dislocation which happened at the 2022 World Aquatics World Cup Series in the middle of the race, according to SwimSwam, a swimming news organization covering competitive swimming.

Through rehab and more training, Urlando worked his way back to qualifying for the 2024 Paris Olympics.

"It’s been a crazy ride full of ups and downs these past few years. I’m grateful for all the people that have supported me throughout this journey. Honored to be going to my first Olympics," he said in a post to his Instagram
