SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The Sacramento Republic Football Club will host a block party Monday, Oct. 21 to celebrate what the team is calling a “major announcement.”
Sacramento is expected to be awarded the latest Major League Soccer (MLS) franchise, a source familiar with the expansion process told ABC 10 News.
Fans and Sacramentan’s alike are excited about the anticipated announcement, which could bring a more than $250 million soccer stadium to the northern part of downtown.
“It’s definitely going to expand the city,” said fan Ryan Allain. "It’s been an empty lot for as long as I can remember out there. So, I think it has a lot of good potential to really kinda expand the fun in the city.”
The privately funded project was approved by city leaders in April but has been contingent on whether Sacramento wins the bid for an MLS team.

The project could draw crowds for the nation’s largest urban infill project at the Railyards in north downtown, according to developer LDK Ventures. The 244-acre site was home to a former Union Pacific railyard.
It’s now in the process of being converted into a space for a medical center, urban housing, hotels, offices, shops and restaurants.
“Like I already think within the last five years, the city has grown so much and just to see it keep growing, that’s…awesome,” said fan Vechat Kim.
The “indomitable” block party will kick off at 4 p.m. at Capitol Mall and 5th Street in Sacramento on Monday, Oct. 21. The event will be free and open to the public.
Sac Republic FC’s owners, regional leaders, and special guests are expected to attend. An expansion would be announced by MLS Commissioner Don Garber.
