SAN JOSE, Calif. — Chivas, a club team in the Liga MX soccer division in Mexico, has reached a deal with Major League Soccer (MLS) in the U.S. for San Jose Earthquakes winger Cade Cowell.

Chivas will acquire Cowell, 20, for $4 million, according to ESPN.

Cowell is from Ceres, south of Modesto in Stanislaus County, according to MLS. He recently gained eligibility for Chivas after receiving his Mexican passport in early January, ESPN reported.

Generally, Chivas only has domestic players on its roster, but it has enlisted several dual-nationals over the years, according to ESPN. The club relaxed rules regarding players needing to commit to the Mexico national team, ESPN reported.

Cowell debuted with San Jose in 2020 and the senior U.S. national team in 2021. He has made eight appearances and scored one goal at the international level.

He has made 114 appearances with San Jose and scored 10 goals during his time with the club team, ESPN reported. He is the youngest player to hit 100 appearances in Major League Soccer, according to San Jose.

Cowell's younger brother, Chance, has spent time in the youth national team setups of both the U.S. and Mexico, ESPN reported.
