Just a few weeks after her brilliant basketball career with UC Davis ended, Big West Player of the Year Morgan Bertsch is headed for a career in the WNBA.
Bertsch, who will turn 22 at the end of the month, was selected in the third round by the Dallas Wings with the 29th overall pick of tonight’s WNBA Draft, becoming the first player in UC Davis history to be drafted.
That's pretty remarkable considering the former Santa Rosa High School star, who accepted her only Division I scholarship offer, only to become the all-time leading scorer in UC Davis history for both men and women.
Bertsch became the Aggies all-time leader on Dec. 1, well before the conclusion of the Aggies’ season, which included a Big Wet title. She was the fifth leading scorer in the nation, averaging 23.6 points per game and walking away with 2,372 career points in her four seasons with Davis.
The season ended for UC Davis last month in the opening round of the NCAA women's tournament, when they fell to No. 2 Stanford 79-54 at Maples Pavilion.
