Nintendo released a statement on Friday defending its decision to not allow same-sex relationships in its upcoming life simulation video game Tomodachi Life.

A couple of days ago the company said it will stand by its decision despite a social media campaign to sway the company to change its mind.

In the statement, Nintendo explained its decision to exclude homosexual virtual relationships, while leaving the possibility open in a future edition of the game:

"We apologize for disappointing many people by failing to include same-sex relationships in Tomodachi Life. Unfortunately, it is not possible for us to change this game's design, and such a significant development change can't be accomplished with a post-ship patch. At Nintendo, dedication has always meant going beyond the games to promote a sense of community, and to share a spirit of fun and joy. We are committed to advancing our longtime company values of fun and entertainment for everyone. We pledge that if we create a next installment in the Tomodachi series, we will strive to design a game-play experience from the ground up that is more inclusive, and better represents all players."

Tomodachi Life was originally released in Japan last year and will come out in North America on June 6. The game features a cast of Mii characters (Miis are Nintendo's user-created in-game avatars) living together on a virtual island. On the island, players simulate real-life activities in a fantasy setting such as shopping, visiting an amusement park, play games or go on virtual dates with other players.

A 3DS exclusive, the game is rated "E for Everyone" by the ESRB.
