Why over a dozen cars were towed near Kirkwood

Here's how you can avoid getting towed, plus parking safety tips.

AMADOR COUNTY, Calif. — In mid-January, the California Highway Patrol said it towed more than 18 vehicles in Kirkwood parked along State Route 88, blocking the road.

Officer Cynthia White from CHP Amador says this isn't just happening in that area but in places like San Andreas and South Lake Tahoe, which have ski resorts and snow parks.

She says if your vehicle is parked along the highway and it's on the road, it could be towed because it poses a hazard for drivers and snow plows. White says that can cost over $300 plus storage fees.

She says if you are going to a snow park or ski resort, plan for parking and know what other options you have since spots can fill up quickly.

"That's why we're having the problem with people parking along the sides of the roads. It's dangerous, parking on the highway is dangerous in general but especially parking when you're in the lane, that's a big no-no. You become a hazard in that roadway. You wouldn't park on State Route 99 in the lane so it's no different from parking on Highway 88 for us," said White.

White says because of the speed along State Route 88, you should avoid parking on the side of the road. She says if snow removal conditions exist, or your vehicle is in the lane, you can be legally towed.

Parking along the highway can cause issues for snowplows. White says they plow the roads and shoulders so drivers can see the white line. So, if you are on the shoulder and they can't see it, they can't plow it and this could cause delays.
