How to save money at the pump amid California's high gas prices

Some of the tips include making sure fluids are topped in accordance with the owner's manual and keeping the tires properly inflated.

CALIFORNIA, USA — Nationally, the average for a gallon of regular unleaded gas is $4.41, but it's far worse in California where the average is $5.85.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the sanctions that followed, crude oil prices went above $100 a barrel. It's an impact that has worked its way to the gas pump. However, Aldo Vazquez with AAA said there are things people can do to save some cash.

"Applying for those gas stations with the rewards programs because that can save you a couple of cents here on the gallon," Vazquez said.

At places like Costco, their $5.29 a gallon gas requires a membership and sometimes builds a line around the block. For some people, it's still worth the wait.

"I’m not sure what’s the quality of the fuel over here, but the thing is, it’s cheap, man," said Shubham Oberoi.

AAA said vehicle maintenance is also something that is often overlooked.

"Because remember, if your vehicle isn't working at its proper capacity, it's got to work harder to run out there on the road," Vazquez said.

Some of the tips include making sure fluids are topped in accordance with the owner's manual and keeping the tires properly inflated.

Aaron Weinberger even bought a Prius, something he thought that he'd never do.

"Eventually, if this keeps up, what? We’re going to be paying $10, $20 a gallon?" he said.

AAA said it's Memorial Day price forecast is coming next week, but in the meantime, they don't expect high prices to dissuade drivers from hitting the road during the summer travel season. Instead, travelers are expected to look for savings elsewhere by getting cheaper food or accommodations.
