SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) is shutting down ramps to get on and off Interstate 5 from 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday.
This weekend’s closure on I-5 includes the connector's closure and all ramps at the U.S. Highway 50 Interchange near Downtown Sacramento.
Drivers traveling on I-5 and Highway 50 should expect delays and plan for additional time to get to their destination. Caltrans said it suggests using State Route 99, Capital City Freeway, or Interstate 80 as alternate routes.
The northbound I-5 Lane Closures:
- Lanes No. 1 and No. 2 from under Highway 50 to North of Lincoln Highway
- Lanes No. 1 and No. 2 from South of Broadway to J Street
The northbound I-5 Ramp Closures:
- Off-Ramp to J Street
- Ramps north of Lincoln Highway
- The P Street on-ramp to northbound I-5
The southbound I-5 Closures:
- I-5's auxiliary lane from Richards Boulevard on-ramp to J Street off-ramp
- I-5's off-ramp to J Street
The eastbound U.S. 50 Closures:
- I Street Bridge off-ramp to J Street
The westbound U.S. 50 Closures:
- The Highway 50 ramp to the southbound I-5 Connector
- W Street on-ramp to southbound I-5
- 15th Street on-ramp to westbound Highway 50
This weekend's work will be similar to the previous 55-hour weekend construction performed and includes removing PCC pavement, roadway excavation, placing aggregate base, HMA paving, and striping.
People who live near I-5 should expect loud noises throughout the construction.
The speed limit has been reduced to 55 mph, and the California Highway Patrol (CHP) will be present for traffic enforcement.
Caltrans said the work being done is part of a $370 million project to rehabilitate 67-lane miles of roadway, build 23 miles of carpool lanes, add sound walls and improve the existing electrical and drainage systems. The project is expected to be completed in December 2021.
The scheduled work could change should there be rain. The ramps and lanes will open as soon as the construction is finished should crews finish before Monday morning.
