SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Construction for the Broadway Complete Streets project is underway.
The project aims to create better conditions for bicyclists and pedestrians to use the corridor. The project will also seek to divert some commuter traffic off of Broadway.
Changes include a new 29th Street extension connecting X Street to southbound Highway 99, changes to the number of lanes along Broadway, improvements for pedestrians, and buffered bike lanes.
Drivers have likely seen construction happening already.
Project Manager Philip Vulliet says construction begins Monday at two of the busiest intersections on the Broadway corridor, Land Park Drive and Riverside Boulevard. The construction will create changes for commuters for about a month.
"What this project is going to do at those intersections is remove the free right turn movement for eastbound broadway traffic heading southbound on either Riverside or Land Park Drive," said Vulliet. "Right now, drivers don't even have to stop, they just have a free right-turn movement onto those roads. That’s very convenient for cars wanting to quickly move through the intersection, but that type of layout isn't great for cyclists and it's not great for pedestrians."
He says this will create a more traditional experience where you stop at a red light and then make a right turn.
While those areas are closed, Vulliet says they will work on extending the curb line, installing new traffic signal poles, and removing what they call pork chop islands and the signal equipment there.
