What to do when driving in foggy conditions

Here are tips to navigate difficult driving conditions on dense, foggy days.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — When it's foggy out, California Highway Patrol Officer Ashley Holiman says to slow down which goes for any type of road condition. She says speed is a big factor in a lot of crashes that happen when it's foggy or raining.

When driving in these conditions, Holiman says to keep plenty of distance between you and the car in front of you. She suggests using your low beams, not high beams because those can make light reflect off the fog making it harder to see.

When it comes to hazard lights, Holiman says not to use them if you're simply driving in foggy conditions and that there are certain times when it is appropriate. For example, to warn drivers of other hazards on the road like disabled vehicles or flooding.

"When it comes to our hazard lights, the reason that we have those on our vehicles is if there is some type of emergency as if you have a disabled vehicle if you need to pull over for some reason, those are the appropriate times to turn on the hazard lights otherwise you can actually be cited for driving with your hazard lights on," said Holiman.

She suggests that if you don't feel safe on the roads in dicey weather conditions, pull off the highway to a safe location. If you have to pull off, for example, in a rural area onto the shoulder, that's a situation Holiman suggests using your hazard lights.
