BIG SUR, Calif. — Big Sur California is made up of roughly 90 miles of coastline along Highway 1 and it's one of the most visited summer travel destinations in California.
With over six million visitors per year; the beaches, parks and the scenic drive are just a few of the reasons people flock to Big Sur for vacation.
But the most pursued endeavor at Big Sur are the campgrounds at Big Sur Pfeiffer State Park.
According to Marcos Ortega, the Big Sur Sector Superintendent for California State Parks, the campsites are so popular that they're typically booked up at least six months in advance.
Ortega says many visitors come out for day trips because it can be a challenge to get a camping spot.
However if you manage to make it out there, here are some of the most popular ways to spend your time, according to Big Sur California:
Hiking, with over a dozen scenic trails
Camping, by reservation only
Whale watching, Humpbacks, California Gray and Blue Whales
Exploring nature, between six state parks in Big Sur
Finding an event, from tours to festivals
State park officials only ask that you avoid illegal camping, be safe, not leave behind trash and respect the park rules so future generations can enjoy the park for years to come.
More information on camping reservations, events and highway conditions can be found on the Big Sur California Website.
