A mobile ID could expedite your travel this holiday season

So far, three California airports have the technology to read them.

CALIFORNIA, USA — There's a digital tool that could expedite your travels if you're traveling by air for the holidays.

If you are a California resident, the Transportation Security Administration now accepts state-issued mobile driver’s licenses and identification cards, which can be found in the California DMV wallet app.

TSA Spokesperson Lorie Dankers says you can use mobile IDs at airports with the technology to read them, which in California is the San Francisco International Airport (SFO), San José Mineta International Airport (SJC) and Los Angeles International Airport (LAX).

Dankers says seven states offer residents digital IDs/mobile driver's licenses for their smartphones and there are 26 airports nationwide where you can use the technology.

"It's really convenient because instead of handing over your physical credential to the TSA officer, you're actually going to activate the wallet on your phone and the equipment is able to read that QR code which is what we have in California right now, or use the NFC feature where you tap like you probably use to do Apple Pay," said Dankers.

She says to make sure you still have the hard copy with you, though.

Although Sacramento International Airport (SMF) may not use the technology now, they do have another way of making your security checkpoint visit simpler.

Dankers says there's a device IDs are inserted into. The system pulls your info and it's able to confirm you're a ticketed traveler without showing a boarding pass.

Dankers says anytime a traveler has to do less at the checkpoint it saves time.
