CALIFORNIA, USA — AAA is expecting over 55 million Americans to travel this Thanksgiving holiday and seven million in California.
Kristine Leenders is from Vacaville and flew back to Sacramento International Airport on Tuesday from Orange County. She got to the airport early to check her bags.
"The line for that was pretty long so I'm glad I arrived like an hour earlier but that was plenty enough time to get to the gate before the plane left," said Leenders.
Pete Buttigieg, United States Secretary of Transportation, highlighted the nationwide travel volume in a press conference Monday morning, ahead of the rush.
"This holiday season is estimated to bring some of the busiest travel days in U.S. history, building on a summer that was already record-breaking," said Buttigieg.
Christie Hudson with Expedia Group says people may need to arrive earlier than they think at the airport.
"We've all been saying for the last year or so to come to the airport at least two hours before your boarding time. I would maybe even add some time onto that for the holidays. Three hours seems crazy but it's really not too long especially if you're checking a bag — that's an additional wait," said Hudson.
When plans change and you're faced with delays or cancellations, Hudson says to speak with a gate agent. They can help with rebooking and accommodations based on the circumstances of your flights. She says statistically, flights that take off after 3 p.m. are 50% more likely to be canceled, so taking an earlier flight can help avoid delays. John Treanor, spokesperson for AAA, says roads will be busy on Wednesday. AAA data shows over 49 million Americans will drive to their Thanksgiving spot.
"Thanksgiving starts on Wednesday before people try to get to their destination, they have that whole Thanksgiving day. Which means it's going to be very busy in the afternoon. Wednesday from 2-8 p.m. is when we expect the busiest roadways. So if you want to avoid that we recommend before 11 o'clock in the morning is the best time to get out," said Treanor.
He says if you're driving, make sure your car is good to go before your trip. Check tires and fluids to avoid getting stuck.
"Gas stations are going to be crowded, you're gonna get traffic, hit those points where it's almost frustrating that you're going so slow. Pack your patience as you say, build in extra time, and be aware of that," said Treanor.
