SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A weak weather system is forecasted to move through Northern California late Wednesday into early New Year’s Eve.
The Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys will see less than 0.10 inches of rain. The Sierra will see about 1-3 inches of snow at pass levels. Snow levels will range between 3,000-4,000 feet. Showers will end well before noon. Dry and chilly weather is expected for the evening as we ring in 2021.
New Year’s Day starts off with patchy fog and frost but then another weather system arrives from the Pacific by the evening bringing more rain and snow through early Saturday. This looks like a mild weather system with light rain and little to no snow accumulation.
After this, Northern California will see a bigger pattern shift to wetter weather to start the New Year. The storm track will dip slightly more toward Central California bringing in several systems from the Pacific.
The first storm will arrive Sunday and last through Monday. Heavy snow is expected above 5,500 feet, making for difficult and dangerous travel through the Sierra. Road closures are possible with likely chain controls. Heavier rain is also on tap for the valley with some ponding on roads and slick conditions.
On and off showers will continue through the week. Totals and timing are still uncertain this far out, but right now it looks like a wetter start to the New Year.
