New timing and totals for incoming atmospheric rivers hitting Northern California

The first in a series of storms delivered big rain totals for Northern California. More storms help bring up water storage in the state.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Two more storms are heading into Northern California to round out the year with big travel impacts expected and possible flooding.

The Sierra is finally seeing the rain turn to snow as colder air is arriving overnight. A Winter Storm Warning will continue for the Sierra until Wednesday at 4 a.m. The valley will see areas of fog but most of the day will be dry before the next storm arrives.

This will be a welcome break after several inches of rain fell from the coast through the valley and foothills, all the way through the Sierra.

Some of the higher rain totals as of 6 p.m. include Blue Canyon in the lower Sierra with over 4 inches. Sonora in the Sierra foothills measured 2.68 inches. Parts of the lower elevations including Fairfield near Travis Air Force Base saw over two inches of rain. Equally impressive were Auburn in the Sierra foothills getting 1.62 inches of rain and Folsom at 1.50 inches.

The second storm is slightly weaker but colder, bringing more moderate rain and snow to the forecast Thursday. Snow levels start off near 5,000 feet but will rise during the evening as the next, wetter storm trails closely behind in the storm lineup.

The third storm arrives Friday and will keep rain and snow in the forecast through New Year's Eve. This storms will impact New Year's weekend, so start thinking about how to safely travel to your destination.

The last storm of the year will bring heavier rain totals and breezy conditions. Snow level rises again close to 7,500 feet bringing more runoff concerns with the ground saturated from previous storms. This will mainly affect creeks and streams getting close to overtopping. Rivers need to be watched through the weekend and into next week.

More storms are heading toward California for the first week of January. Depending on timing and totals, flooding could start to become a bigger concern as we start 2023.
