AUBURN, Calif. — The city of Auburn saw a rare snow flurry Wednesday afternoon as snow briefly fell over parts of Old Town and a low snow system made its way across the foothills.
"There's just enough where you can experience it, and it's really pretty," said Auburn resident Rebecca Murray.
"And then by noon, it's gone," said her husband, Mike Murray.
However, with more snow in the forecast for coming days, the Auburn public works department is preparing for the potential traffic impacts ahead.
"It’s all hands on deck for us," said public works manager Mengil Deane. "We're prepared for it, but we just ask that our citizens just take it easy and be a little slower than they normally would be."
Deane said his department has outfitted the equipment they have on hand to deal with more flurries in the forecast.
Maintenance workers fixed city dump trucks with a snow plow, chains on the tires and a bed full of sand to give it some extra weight while maneuvering.
The department doesn't use road salt to de-ice city streets due to concerns that run-off could contaminate the environment. Instead, trucks carrying sand spreaders roam the roads, providing traction over slick driving surfaces.
"I think it’s just, if people would slow down, we’d be fine. I’m talking to myself by the way," said Auburn resident Bill Mitchell, with a laugh.
Others say they plan on staying home.
"We’ve got a generator at home that we can plug into, so we’re not really worried about it. We’re making soup!" said Rebecca Murray.
