SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Sacramento residents can now say they experienced the hottest day in Sacramento history.
Just after 4 p.m., the downtown Sacramento station hit 115 degrees - breaking the old record of 114 set in 1925. The heat didn't stop there as the station reached 116 degrees at 5 p.m., the new record.
Other locations in the region are shattering daily records and toppling all-time records as well. A powerful, resilient high pressure system, or heat dome, is trapping the Western United States under it's hot, sinking air. The dangerous heat is placing extreme stress on the California power grid, as the state's grid operator declared a level 3 emergency for only the second time in 20 years.
While today was expected to be the worst of the heat, blazing temperatures are still expected for the rest of the work week with temperatures near 110 forecast daily. Relief isn't expected until this weekend, when temperatures will dip back down to the 90's.
Just as dangerous as the daytime record highs are the overnight lows residents will be experiencing for the rest of the week. The National Weather Service expects little to no overnight relief due to the lack of overnight cooling.
