SACRAMENTO, Calif. — September in California has been off to a scorching start, and many more extremely hot days are likely this entire week.

So far in September for Northern California, many triple-digit days have occurred and the worst of the heat wave is still to come this week.

Monday will see many valley temperatures top 110 degrees and break the record for the hottest September day on record.

Foothill locations will likely be over 100, and Truckee and South Lake Tahoe near 90 degrees.

The timing of the heat is also a big part of the story. On very hot days like we will see all week, your window of comfortable weather is very short. Often temperatures will be well into the 90s by noon and top out between 3-6 p.m. We can also see temperatures over 100 even after sunset.

This historic heat wave gets hotter on Tuesday with high temperatures getting close to all-time record heat for many cities in Northern and Southern California. Overnight lows will only dip into the 70s and 80s giving very little overnight relief.

Every precaution should be taken to stay out of the heat during the late afternoon and early evening and find air conditioning, if possible.  Heat can be dangerous and deadly, especially for kids, pets, seniors and health-compromised individuals, especially with inadequate air conditioning.

This weekend should see a very welcome cool down to the 90s by Sunday.
