As temperatures warm into the 80's, it's natural to want to cool off. These warm temperatures are also helping to melt the Sierra snowpack. This cold snowmelt eventually ends up in local rivers and streams and although the cold water may sound refreshing, it's actually quite dangerous.
Before you and your family think about taking a dip.... here are some things to keep in mind:
- Area river temps are between 50°-60°
- In these water temperatures, your body experiences shock in just a few minutes.
- Cold shock can cause an immediate loss of breathing control.
- You will also lose control of your limbs.
- The local waters are cold and fast moving. You can be swept away in just a few inches of water.
