MALIBU, Calif. — A preliminary magnitude 4.7 earthquake struck the Los Angeles area near Malibu Thursday.
The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake struck around 7:30 a.m. four miles north of Malibu. Shakes were felt widely throughout the area.
A few people reported feeling it as far north as Bakersfield and as far south as San Diego. The ShakeAlert app will usually send alerts for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and greater.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said fire authorities are surveying the city. There were no immediate reports of injuries.
The California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services said it was actively monitoring the quake and checking for any damage. The earthquake struck as the region deals with three major wildfires that have forced thousands to evacuate.
