Magnitude-5.3 earthquake rocks Nevada

A 6.5 magnitude quake and aftershocks shook the same area last week.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A preliminary magnitude-5.3 earthquake shook western Nevada Thursday evening in the same area a magnitude-6.5 hit last week.

The United States Geological Survey reported the quake happened at about 5:22 p.m. 33 miles from Tonopah, about 125 miles southeast of Carson City.

There are no immediate reports of damage.

Hundreds of aftershocks have been reported in the area since a 6.5 magnitude quake Friday morning caused minor damage to U.S. Route 95, the main highway between Las Vegas and Reno.
