SACRAMENTO, Calif. — UPDATE: Thursday 5pm
The heat watch has been upgraded to an EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING.
ORIGINAL:
A strong area of high pressure is building across the west and will bring extreme heat as we approach Labor Day weekend.
Highs will range from 95-110 degrees in the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys as well as the Sierra foothills.
Overnight lows will be dangerously warm, only dropping to the mid-60s and 70s. This provides little relief from the intense afternoon temperatures.
A statewide Flex Alert has been issued for Labor Day weekend by the California Independent System Operator (CAISO). The agency is also asking people to conserve electricity.
Records this time of year range from 105-110 degrees. Some of these may fall this weekend with the hottest days showing possible highs in this range.
Even though we've seen stretches of 100s this summer, it's still best to take the proper precautions. Drink plenty of water, try to stay in air-conditioning and avoid strenuous activity from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Help the elderly, kids, and pets stay cool.
Smoke is starting to clear from surrounding fires, but air quality could still be poor with building ozone under this stagnant weather pattern.
