Farmers prepare plants for freezing temperatures

With a freeze warning effect Monday night into Tuesday morning, farmers are doing everything they can to keep their plants warm.

STOCKTON, Calif. — Stockton is seeing some of its coldest temperatures of the season. With a freeze warning effect Monday night into Tuesday morning, farmers are doing everything they can to keep their plants warm.

Eric Firpo is the owner of "In Season" market and nursery in Stockton. Like other farmers on cold nights, he's preparing to protect his plants from freezing temperatures.

"Some plants that might be frost-sensitive have a high water content in them. This is some of the problems with succulents on really cold nights. So if the water freezes, the plant freezes," said Firpo.

Firpo knows a few techniques on how to keep his plants warm.

"You may have an old sheet or blanket that can be used to cover something," explained Firpo.

Firpo has thousands of plants in his nursery, but only a small percentage are vulnerable to the cold weather.

"If you have one plant that's in a pot and you have a bucket...you can just cover it with a bucket. On a windy night like this you're going to want to put a brick on it to make sure it stays covered," Firpo stated.

Oddly enough, some plants enjoy the cold weather.

"A lot of people don't realize that there's plenty of plants that like the cold. There are plenty of winter shrubs, things that flower in the winter, and vegetables that grow in the winter. And they're not bothered by cold weather."
