Fire weather and a big warm up coming to Northern California

Starting Tuesday night at 11 p.m. a Red Flag Warning will be issued for all Northern California alleys until 1 p.m. Thursday.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Cooler June days in the 80s are coming to a close for Northern California as an abrupt weather change will bring in warmer temperatures and fire concerns.

Starting Tuesday night at 11 p.m. a Red Flag Warning will be issued for all Northern California alleys including the Sacramento and San Joaquin valleys until 1 p.m. on Thursday.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when fire conditions are critical with a combination of wind with gusts more than 30 mph accompanied by very low relative humidity often less than 30% overnight, and in the 15% or less range during the day. Exact criteria will vary region to region. Fire easily grows quickly with strong winds and dry air.

Higher humidity often has vegetation retain or collect more moisture making it more difficult to burn. Low humidity allows vegetation to burn more easily and is prone to fire growth.

This Red Flag Warning primarily is concerned with fast-growing grassfires. Grassfires can and do move into areas with structures and that is a concern as well.

The temperatures will be on the rise as well with Wednesday highs creeping into the low 90s and near 100 by Thursday. Temperatures will be near 100 through the weekend.

The Red Flag Warning will expire at 1 p.m. on Thursday unless fire conditions continue.
