First responders warn of flooding dangers amid winter storms

"It's incredibly serious. We saw what happened in January. Several people died in the Wilton area," said Chris Vestal.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — There's a big concern for flooding in the Sacramento area, especially after five people lost their lives in Sacramento County back in the January storms.

Areas like Discovery Park are already flooded with Tiscornia Beach completely underwater.

First responders with the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District are already preparing for more dangerous floods. Although the water can look peaceful from up above, they say it can become extremely dangerous for people who are around areas of water.

On Sunday, Yolo County Sheriff's deputies had to rescue someone off the Yolo Bypass Wildlife area. They had to use a boat to get the man, and he was then taken to the hospital for further evaluation.

Several agencies including Yolo County Search and Rescue, and the West Sacramento Fire Department helped in the rescue. Because of situations like these, the Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District says agencies are preparing, just in case. They have crews working around the clock.

However, the ideal situation is for people not to put themselves in scary scenarios in the first place.

"It's incredibly serious. We saw what happened in January. Several people died in the Wilton area, right near I-5 and throughout the community. We have the same concerns all throughout Sacramento. Right behind me, you have Fair Oaks Bluffs and some areas where homes could become dangerous too," said Chris Vestal, Battalion Chief at the Sacramento Metroopolitan Fire District.

Sacramento Metro Fire is urging people to look for any type of dangers around their homes. They say to have a plan ready if you must evacuate quickly.

If you find yourself in a bad situation, the first thing you want to do is try to get to higher ground, whether it's getting on the roof of your car or somewhere where you won't become submerged in water and call 911 immediately.
