California Heat Wave Weather Forecast: How long will it last?

Be ready for it to stay hot because 100 degree days are in the forecast for a while.

SACRAMENTO, Calif — Across California people are asking how long will the heat wave last in the forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for much of northern California.

Here's the ABC10 Forecast:

The stretch of 100s is underway.  We'll be tracking the potential record consecutive stretch of 100+ degree heat and daily record highs.

There's a lot in the forecast so here's a quick summary with the details in the article:

  • Extreme heat on the way this week... highs Tuesday-Sunday between 105-112°
  • Overnight low temps in the valley range from low to mid-70s... foothill lows 75-80°
  • Excessive Heat Warning Tuesday through Sunday across the valley, foothills, Delta, Coastal Range, and parts of the Bay Area
  • Red Flag Warning for the Sacramento Valley, Delta, and Sierra foothills from Monday night through Wednesday afternoon due to gusty northerly winds, low RH, and highs near 110°
  • Possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs for parts of Northern California starting on Tuesday

A strong ridge is building overhead as high pressure sits in the west. Throughout the week, this is expected to bring the hottest temperatures of the year so far with at least a 6 day period with high temperatures between 105-110°F.

An Excessive Heat Warning is posted for Tuesday, July 2 through Sunday, July 7.

Dangerous and extreme heat could cause heat related illnesses. People are advised to limit time outdoors during the late morning through early evening. It's important to protect yourself from the heat and sun by drinking plenty of water before, during and after time in the heat; and by wearing sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 and wearing a wide brimmed hat, sunglasses, and loose clothing that covers the skin.

In particular, Tuesday and Wednesday look very hot, with highs near 110° both days, and some parts of the valley will likely get closer to 113° during the midweek stretch.

The extended period of extreme heat includes the 4th of July holiday. Planning is key, keeping all outdoor activities to before 10a or even giving any outdoor plans a rethink due to this heat.

Overnight lows in the valley will also be quite warm in the low to middle 70s. Foothill low temps could be in the mid to upper 70s for midweek! This type of heat can result in heat illnesses like heat stroke which can be deadly. There is extreme heat risk in the foothills from Wednesday through Saturday because of the very hot afternoons and very warm overnights.

Avoid spending much time outdoors this week as highs will be near 110°. In this heat, heat exhaustion and heat stroke can happen quickly.

Also of note, the rivers are still fast and cold. Emergency officials are again reminding people to wear life jackets when by the water. This includes not only boaters and rafters but people hiking by the water. This type of heat will bring a heightened fire danger with fuels continuing to dry. Always use safe and sane fireworks and be mindful of BBQ embers when cooking.

There is good model agreement for next week with regards to timing and temperature so don't wait to start making heat preps and plans. The biggest unknown still to be worked out is when our stretch of triple digit heat will end.

In addition to the extreme heat, we're also expecting critical fire danger for the Sacramento Valley, Delta, and Sierra foothills below 3000 ft on Tuesday.

PG&E is warning of possible Public Safety Power Shutoffs for parts of Colusa, Glenn, Lake, Napa, Shasta, Solano, Sonoma, Tehama, and Yolo counties. The entirety of these counties will not lose power due to PSPS, but parts of them could. Prepare now for possible power outages combined with critical fire danger and 110° heat.

A Red Flag Warning is posted from Monday evening through Wednesday afternoon.

Northerly wind gusts up to 35 mph will be possible, strongest Tuesday morning. Although wind speeds drop somewhat into the afternoon, relative humidity values will drop into the single digits by Tuesday afternoon.

Low RH, northerly winds, and highs near 110° are a horrible fire danger combo and will keep the region in critical fire weather danger all day Tuesday and Wednesday. Humidity levels expected to drop around 5-15% Tuesday and Wednesday during the Red Flag warning event.
