SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — Skiing on the Fourth of July is on many Californians' bucket list, and now, you can do it this year.
Squaw Valley announced Wednesday morning it will be spinning lifts until July 7, 2019, after almost 600 inches of snow has already fallen. This will extend the season past the Fourth of July and have likely the longest lift served non-glacier skiing in the lower 48 states.
Mammoth Mountain announced in February that they will have skiing until July 4, 2019.
Lake Tahoe will have a huge list of possibilities this summer, like boating, paddle boarding, camping and now skiing is on the menu as well. Squaw Valley was open that late in the year before with the last late season after a monster snow year just two years ago in 2017.
Spring and summer skiing is different, and it's best to plan ahead for a shorter run day (snow gets wet and sloshy in the late afternoon). That means lots of sun protection and T-shirts and shorts are common.
