How temperatures have changed since the first Earth Day | Geek Lab

A warming world can mean big changes in how we adapt and use the resources we have, with some technology fields showing big job growth.

The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970. Since then, the world has seen a lot of changes in this warming climate.

The world has expanded in technology, industry and more housing, and this has resulted in more carbon output and less forests. The ultimate outcome has been a warming world.

In Sacramento, we’ve warmed on average 1.5° since 1970.

For California, it’s warmed over 2.5°, which is closer to how much the U.S. has warmed overall.

The biggest warming is happening in Alaska, where temperatures have warmed over four degrees in about 50 years.

However, the Desert Southwest is also seeing some big warming with Las Vegas warming nearly five degrees since the first Earth Day.

Globally, more places have seen warming as opposed to cooling, and the impacts are numerous, spanning from the ocean to the skies. Some of the immediate results that people already see include more extreme floods and droughts.

The world is finding a way to adapt though. There is greater global awareness on climate change, water conservation, and job growth in the renewable energy sector like wind and solar.

The Sacramento region will continue the Earth Day celebration at Southside Park at 700 T Street in Sacramento on April 28 from 11am-4pm. There will be live music and family activities.
