Kingvale sees flurries of snow as winter storm hits the area

Many in the Kingvale area are used to snow around this time, but they haven't necessarily seen a whole lot of it lately.

KINGVALE, Calif. — The flurries have been coming down in waves around the mountains. It’s something that people near the Kingvale area are used to, but they just haven’t seen a lot of it this winter.

The snowstorm that started with a few flakes eventually became a flurry.

Danny Miles, a chain installer, said things have been pretty slow as of late.

Despite some scenes of winter bliss at Boreal Ski Resort recently, it's been a slow start to the snowy season. The water content of the statewide snowpack was 25% of the average to date, according to Sean de Guzman, a water supply forecasting official with the California Department of Water Resources.

It's been a disappointment so far for people in search of fresh snow, however, as Caltrans and other agencies have warned, driving in these conditions is still hazardous.

"It’s kind of scary when you’re driving by yourself," said Don Alhambra, who was one of many people trying to get home. He was among the caravan of cars and trucks on I-80 near Kingvale.

As for people like Miles, who know the mountain roads well, he shares this advice.

"Slow down. Stay home. That’s about the best that I can say," said Miles.
