Lake Tahoe Campground openings 'snowed in' after historic snowpack

California State Parks officials issued a travel notice saying many state parks across Tahoe are delaying their openings because of excess snowfall.

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. — California State Park campgrounds across the Sierra are delaying their openings set for Memorial Day weekend because of heavy snow from the historic snowpack.

With many state parks still having 3 to 6 feet of snow blocking access for park employees to do routine maintenance, people with reservations for the weekend will be issued full refunds.

The park openings delayed include:

  • Emerald Bay State Park
    (Reservations now starting June 16)
  • Ed Z’berg Sugar Pine Point State Park
    (Reservations now starting June 1)
  • Grover Hot Springs State Park
    (Reservations now starting June 12)
  • Plumas-Eureka State Park
    (Reservations now starting June 16)
  • Tahoe State Recreation Area
    (Reservations now starting June 16)

Donner Memorial State Park may be delayed in opening May 26, and officials say they will reassess in the coming weeks.

The State Parks’ reservation system online will have the most up-to-date information on scheduled opening dates.
