Calaveras County, foothill communities brace for low snow

Hardware, grocery stores seeing brisk business in places like Angel's Camp

ANGELS CAMP, Calif. — Forecasters say snowfall could accumulate in the Gold Country foothills unlike what's been seen in several years.

Inside Angel's Food Market along Highway 4 in Angel's Camp, cash registers are beeping as customers like Leah Whitear are buying goods and getting ready for snow.

"It's a big deal. It's the talk all over town right now. It truly is, yeah," says Whitear, who was stocking up on bottled water, snacks, meat and more.

Just down the road at Calaveras Lumber, snow shovels and snow and ice melters are hot sellers. Sean Ryan picked up a snow shovel as well as paint for his retirement home.

"We're just going to be hunkered down inside painting some bathrooms inside the house," said Ryan, who lives near Murphy's.

Calaveras Lumber General Manager Jodie Brixey says business is picking up.

"Definitely the pipe insulation, the faucet covers and ice melt have been the most, tarps as well," said Brixey, describing what customers have been picking up.

Of course, traveling on snowy roads can be tricky, especially for those who are not used to it. Retired college economics professor Francene Feldbrudge has lived in the area for 22 years, and her advice equates to common sense.

"Go slow or stay home. First, stay home if you don't have to go," said Feldbrudge.

AAA agrees.

"Give yourself room between the cars in front of you, and that's because roads are going to be slick," said AAA spokesperson John Treanor.

Other tips to remember:

  • Make sure you have good windshield wipers and plenty of fluid
  • Turn on your lights or even your hazard lights if visibility is poor
  • If you do start skidding, turn into the direction of the skid

However, if the car gets stuck, be prepared with an unusual tip.

"Have kitty litter or sand in your car. The reason for that is if you're parked and things freeze over, you can put some of that behind the wheels of your car and get some traction. It could help you out," said Treanor.

Keeping an emergency kit handy is also a good idea along with extra clothes, blankets, water and an ice scraper in the car.
