May 2019 rainfall was record-setting

Downtown Sacramento usually averages 0.76 inches of rain in May. This year it was more than four times greater!

May is typically the time of year when the Central Valley starts to transition to a drier, warmer weather pattern that will stay through the summer. This year, however, was quite the opposite.

In fact, numerous storms developed and dropped record-setting rain in the valley.

Downtown Sacramento averages about 0.76 inches of rain for the month of May. This year, we smashed that average and reached an all-time high for monthly total rainfall at 3.42 inches.

The month started off dry but then the storms started coming, and that wet pattern stuck around right through the Memorial Day weekend.

Folks headed to Lake Tahoe to kick off the "unofficial start to summer" were greeted with fresh snow. Some resorts had record snowfall for the month, leading to extended skiing into the summer. Mammoth Mountain is even staying open until August.
