SACRAMENTO, Calif —
Cooling centers can be the place to go when you're looking to escape the heat, hydrate and relax. It can also be a good place to go when you don't want to run up your own air-conditioning costs.
Typically cities open cooling centers when the high heat index is forecasted above 105 degrees and the low heat index is forecasted 75 degrees or higher for three consecutive days.
The heat index is a measurement that considers humidity and temperature to more accurately show how hot it feels.
RELATED:
Even when cooling centers aren't operating, the businesses they operate out of may still be good places to cool down since they're usually open to the public during normal business hours. Hours are extended when these locations turn into cooling centers.
