SACRAMENTO, Calif. — The ABC10 Weather Impact team is calling for Alert Days for the middle of the week due to well above average temperatures.
The holiday weekend will end with increasing winds and cooler temperatures. A small weather system will push inland bringing gusty winds to the valley and foothills late Sunday through early Monday with gusts 15-25 mph.
Winds pick up in the Sierra later in the day and will cause bigger fire concerns.
A Red Flag Warning is in effect starting at 11 a.m. Monday for the Sierra and Northeast California. Gusty winds and low humidity will elevate the chance for rapid fire spread. Wind gusts will be 30-40 mph and relative humidity will be as low as 9%-15%.
Fire danger begins to lower overnight Monday as winds become lighter, but there's a chance winds could be a problem into midday Tuesday.
On the heels of some slightly cooler than average temperatures on Labor Day, the valley will feel a big warm-up for the rest of the week. A quick change in the weather pattern develops as a ridge of high pressure develops, initially bringing dry, warm north winds.
Even bigger warming is expected for the middle and end of the week. Temperatures will be 10-15° above average, with highs from 100-105°.
Slightly cooler weather develops over the coming weekend as the ridge pushes east. This will help ease the stress of intense heat but highs stay above average.
As the high pressure ridge loses its' grip over the state, unstable weather is possible in the mountains. The ABC10 Weather Impact team will be tracking the chance for Sierra showers and thunderstorms.
This weather shift is all happening as drought conditions grow throughout the state. The latest Drought Monitor shows dryness at 41.89% up from 33.41% last week.
