SACRAMENTO, Calif. — California’s midwinter summer break has given way to dramatically cooler and blustery weather with scattered rain, hail and much-needed mountain snow.
Sacramento, however, continues its dry streak this winter with no rain expected on Wednesday. This would be the 40th day in a row in during the rainy season without any precipitation.
Sacramento's all time record for a mid-winter dry streak is 44 days and the forecast calls for continued dry weather.
Parts of the Sierra Nevada are under a high wind warning. A truck driver was killed on a Mono County highway in the Sierras when his truck overturned early Tuesday.
By Tuesday afternoon, 9 inches of snow landed on the top of the Mount Rose ski resort on the edge of Reno. The National Weather Service says 3 inches of snow was recorded early Tuesday in Reno, where the mercury reached 67 degrees on Monday. About 3 inches fell at South Lake Tahoe and Homewood, on Lake Tahoe’s west shore and about an inch in Sparks and Carson City.
Winter weather advisories are in effect in mountain ranges north and east of Los Angeles just days after much of the region sweltered in summer-like temperatures. The San Francisco Bay Area got light rain and drizzle. Light snow has fallen in the Sierra as a cold, low-pressure system moves south.
