SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A rare September rainstorm brought fall-like conditions to Northern California the last few days.

While not unprecedented, September storms are uncommon in the state. Sacramento Executive Airport averages 0.09" of rain in September, so most valley locations were far above normal for the month.

A robust September low pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska brought exciting weather to the region in the form of thunderstorms, widespread precipitation, below average temperatures and snow to high elevations.

The center of the system passed over the state today, moving to the east and taking the cool temperatures and precipitation with it. Lingering showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue over the mountains and far Northern California for the rest of the night before the system finally pushes out of the region.

Due to the convective nature of the storm, storm totals were far spottier than the average winter storm. Convective storms, or thunderstorms, dump heavy rain in a localized area. Thunderstorms continuously moved over cities like Davis and Woodland, and those areas subsequently were drenched. The totals below were pulled from the National Weather Service. More localized reports can be found here.

The high Sierra even received a dusting of snow from this storm, such as Mt. Rose, which was painted white from the late summer storm.

Looking ahead, high pressure will move into the vacuum left by the low pressure system, replacing the autumn-like conditions experienced over the past week with warm and dry weather over the extended forecast.

Temperatures are expected to warm to nearly seasonal average on Friday at around 87 degrees before peaking in the low 90s this weekend and into Monday.
