CALIFORNIA, USA — Cal OES is warning about a viral video claiming a so-called megaflood is coming just as Northern California is set to face several rounds of big storms over the next week.
“This megaflood named the ARK storm has nearly a 30% chance of occurring within the next 30 years," Cal OES said in their warning video. "This video has over a half million views and is misleading Californians about a storm of epic proportions they say is about to hit our state. We are expecting rain in California this month, but nothing like what the video mentions.”
ABC10 Chief Meteorologist Monica Woods said the storms ahead are very typical winter storms.
"It’s just when they come in succession of each other they can pose the potential for flooding. You want to make sure you go to a reliable source,” said Woods.
Woods led an exclusive four-part series on the possibility of a megaflood in California. Woods added that the ABC10 weather team has been vigilant on watching the storms ahead because they do pose a flood risk but not a megaflood.
"What would it take for us to get there? By no means are we heading into that type of situation even with multiple storms in the pipeline. Not all of them are going to be direct hits. When you break it down and just dissect each storm at a time, it starts to calm the fears and make it a little bit more manageable and realistic. These are winter storms for us,” said Woods.
