Sacramento's Discovery Park to temporarily close due potential flooding ahead of second atmospheric river

Officials say staff will be monitoring the river elevations throughout the weekend and closure notices will be updated when necessary.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Discovery Park in Sacramento is temporarily going to close ahead of the next atmospheric river storm hitting the region.

Officials with the Sacramento County Department of Regional Parks say the closure is due to the possibility of flooding as the Sacramento River levels could potentially rise. The Park will remain closed until further notice.

The park, located near the Sacramento and American Rivers, is in a historic floodplain which is designed to flood when river levels rise.

Officials say staff will be monitoring the river elevations throughout the weekend and closure notices will be updated when necessary.

They are asking parkgoers in other parts of the county to use caution as conditions are changing throughout the next few days.

“Grounds are kind of saturated," said Ken Casparis, Sacramento County spokesperson. “There may be strong winds, so just be cautious of fallen trees or branches. If you see any storm related damage, you can report that by calling 311.”

The last time Discovery Park flooded was in 2023. The Sol Blume music festival was scheduled in April but had to reschedule to August because of existing flood waters.
