'High heat does a lot to your car' | Preparing your car for the extreme heat

At T1 Automotive off Broadway in Downtown Sacramento, the shop sees a spike in customers bringing in their cars with a multitude of problems during the hot months.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — A check engine light or a broken A/C unit is the last thing anyone wants to experience during a heat wave, but not preparing your car for the extreme weather could leave some drivers uncomfortable or stuck on the side of the road — in fact, stranded drivers are keeping AAA and mechanics busy these days.

"High heat does a lot to your car. Typically around summer time, AAA - both at their auto repair centers and roadside assistance - gets about a 25% increase in calls," said John Treanor, spokesperson for AAA Northern California.

At T1 Automotive off Broadway in Downtown Sacramento, the shop sees a spike in customers bringing in their cars with a multitude of problems during the hot months. Hai Trinh has owned and operated the auto repair shop for more than 15 years.

"The cars break down because of overheating problems, A/C problems, knocking problems," Trinh said.

AAA recommends routine car inspections and maintenance, especially during the summer season and during periods of extreme heat.

"You want to replace your battery before it dies. That way you're not stranded on the side of the road," Treanor said. "Make sure your tires are inflated - underinflated tires can actually cause blowouts. The tire can overheat, expand too quickly and then you have a blowout."

A common reason for A/C systems failing is because of a leak, according to Trinh. If that happens, he says to go to a trusted mechanic, but had also had some advice for drivers.

"Top off all fluids, especially coolant, because it cools off the engine and helps the A/C work better (and) clean the condenser," Trinh said.

AAA says drivers should have cold water, non-perishable foods and a first-aid kit in their cars because it could take a while for a tow truck to show up.
