Excessive heat returns as fire danger continues to rise in Northern California

Another round of triple digit temperatures as the new work week begins. This will bring renewed heat risk to much of the Sacramento and San Joaquin Valleys.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — June is off to a hot start with another stretch of 100s ahead to start the new work week.

The warming trend begins Monday with parts of the upper Sacramento Valley in the major heat risk area. That will expand through the valley on Tuesday with most areas seeing the hottest temperatures of the week. Wednesday stays near 100 before a cooling breeze kicks in again on Thursday.

An Excessive Heat Warning is posted for Tuesday and Wednesday for the Northern and Central Sacramento Valley as temperatures once again climb into the triple digits. A Heat Advisory is in place for the Southern Sacramento Valley, Delta and Northern San Joaquin Valley Tuesday and Wednesday with temperatures hovering near 100°.

Monday's highs will be in the upper 90s across most of the valley, with the upper Sacramento Valley reaching into the hundreds. Tuesday will likely be the hottest day of the three, with widespread triple-digit highs ranging from about 101-106° in the valley.

In addition to the warm afternoons, morning low temperatures will be very warm Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. Valley lows will be in the mid to upper 60s, and some foothill locations may be close to 80° at sunrise!

Heat risk will go from "Minor" this weekend to "Major" early this week, so it'll be important to take precautions to protect yourself from the heat. This heat will seriously impact everyone without access to cooling breaks and that isn't actively staying hydrated.

  • SUNSCREEN: The American Cancer Society recommends a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30
  • HAT: A wide-brimmed hat – not a ballcap – that covers your ears and neck offers further sun protection.
  • SHADE: The CDC recommends about 35 minutes in the heat, then a 25 minute break in the shade/A.C.
  • DRINK WATER: Drink lots of water before, during, and after time in the heat. The CDC recommends about a cup every 20 minutes.
  • AVOID ENERGY DRINKS & ALCOHOL: These drinks can dehydrate you quickly. Save the caffeine for the morning.

Rivers are still running cold and high so lakes may be a safer option at this point in the season for water recreation.

Fire danger is also starting to rise. For the first time this year, parts of the Bay Area and the Sacramento Valley are in the moderate risk zone for wildfire potential. This is largely due to continued drying of low-elevation fuels, well-above average heat and low humidity.

After Wednesday, temperatures start to come back down toward average as a weak low moves across Northern California. It'll be minor but noticeable relief as highs will be in the upper 80s and low 90s to end the workweek.

Temperatures for Father's Day weekend are likely to be in the middle 90s which will still be above average.
