What's open, What's closed: Some Northern California schools staying closed as others reopen

Many schools in Northern California are dealing with the aftermath of the storm. Power outages and damage might keep some school closed another day.

CALIFORNIA, USA — An onslaught of rain and wind devastated many communities across Northern California over the past number of days, and some school district are still dealing with the aftermath.

Early Sunday morning, heavy winds and rain toppled trees and knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of people across the region. The latest in a series of atmospheric river storms has canceled classes for some students in Northern California.

Some school districts saw no damage from the storms, but others are still dealing with outages and damage.

Here's what school districts in Northern California have planned for Jan 10.

Sacramento City Unified School District

Most of the Sacramento City Unified School District will be returning from winter break Tuesday. However, at least five campuses will be holding off their return for another day.

Success Academy, Sutterville Elementary, Pony Express Elementary, Rosa Parks K-8 and John Morse Therapeutic Center are still without power, according to the district. They will continue to be closed Jan. 10.

Elk Grove Unified School District

As of 9 p.m., the Elk Grove Unified School has the following schools closed for Jan. 10.

  • C.W. Dillard will remain closed on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, per OES Evacuation Order
  • Cosumnes River Elementary School will remain closed Tuesday, January 10, 2023, per OES Evacuation Order
  • Joseph Sims Elementary School will remain closed on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, due to power outages 
  • Daylor and Las Flores High Schools will remain closed on Tuesday, January 10, 2023, due to power outages 

All other schools in the district will have class on Jan. 10 and start at the regular time. Charles Mack Elementary was previously on this list, but power has since been restored. Charles Mack Elementary will have school in session Jan. 10.

San Juan Unified School District

As schools are expected to be open Jan. 10 for San Juan Unified students return from winter break. 

However, a spokesperson said a handful of school sites were still without power. The district is hoping power can be restored by the morning. 

Those schools will be assessed in the morning and any schools without power might be closed. The district will communicate with families for the impacted schools in the morning.

Galt Joint Union Elementary and High School districts

Galt Join Union High School District will have class in session on Jan. 10

Galt Joint Union Elementary School District will have class in session on Jan. 10.

Stockton Unified School District

All classes have been canceled due to extreme weather on Jan. 10.

Lodi Unified School District

School is expected to resume Jan. 10 for the Lodi Unified School District except for Turner Academy, which is still without power as of Tuesday morning, according to a district spokesperson.

Live Oak Elementary, which temporarily lost power Monday evening, has since been restored.

All other Lodi Unified schools will be in session Jan. 10.

Manteca Unified School District

Class will be in session for Manteca Unified Jan. 10.

Tracy Unified School District

Classes at Tracy Unified will be in session Jan. 10. If needed, they plan to open on a rainy day schedule.

Modesto City Schools

Class is still expected to be in session Jan. 10

Turlock Unified School District

Class is still expected to be in session on Jan. 10.

Tahoe Truckee Unified School District

All schools in the Tahoe Truckee Unified School District are closed Tuesday, Jan. 10 for a snow day.
