Northern California Weather: Rare October heat wave continues. Here's a look at records

Fall and October begin with continued heat and fire risk.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Northern California just experienced its hottest summer on record, but the hits keep coming.

There's been 47 days with temperatures 100 degrees or hotter in Sacramento so far and there could be a few more that would extend that record. It's likely Sacramento hits 100 Thursday and would extend the record. If this happens, then it would be double the amount of 100 degree days we typically see in any given year.

  • Stockton hit 105 Wednesday, breaking its daily record by four degrees.
  • Modesto hit 104 Wednesday, breaking its daily record by five degrees.

Thursday temperatures will get close to records again for the region.

The coastal range and Bay Area will see widespread 100-degree temperatures in the valley and 100+ temperatures. There will be some relief for far Northern California and the immediate coast but that's about it.

Since it's so hot for October, it's worth looking at records. Here are some numbers of note:

Records were set Tuesday and Wednesday with widespread forecasts near 100 degrees. Thursday will be slightly "cooler" but still near 100 and records.

People need to monitor for heat-related illnesses as well as fire risk. The weekend will still be hot in the upper to mid 90s when the average high is in the mid 80s.
