Sacramento County crews address downed trees and countless potholes after storms

The county has about 5,200 lane miles of road, and there are potholes everywhere.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — With the sun out, the focus now turns to storm cleanup and tackling the potholes left behind.

Storm after storm has left Sacramento county residents on the lookout.

"Downed trees. I haven't come across any power lines, but mainly the potholes. The vehicles are just tearing up the roads, and you don't know how deep they are," said Becky Beam, a McClellan Park resident.

On clear days, the damage left behind is clear.

"This past storm that just went through, we only had around 15 trees that were knocked down as opposed to 70 in the January storms. So we were lucky that we didn't have as much wind and rain to hit the area," said Matt Robinson, a spokesperson with Sacramento County.

Robinson says it gives maintenance crews an opportunity to make repairs  with a big focus on potholes.

Watt Avenue is one of the busiest roadways and was one of the most damage from the storms.

"I'm driving down Watt to go to work and my car, little mini, just goes everywhere," said Heather Crosswhipe, a Natomas resident.

They're using a hot mix to fix the pothole problems before the next storm.

"When we do these pothole patches, that's the best way we can get to places as quickly as possible and do as much maintenance work as we can," said Robinson.

Keep in mind, the county has about 5,200 lane miles of road, and there are potholes everywhere.

Robinson says they rely on people to call 311 so they know where to go to cover the potholes. And if at all possible, people should always avoid hitting one.

"They're doing hard work and they have a lot to do. Trying to be patient and the wear and tear on the car, you know," said Crosswhipe.

If you see a pothole in Sacramento county, call 311 to report it. Or you can go online to the county's risk management agency to file a claim and you might be able to get your repairs paid.
