SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Flooding concerns have prompted Sacramento County to close some parks ahead another round of storms entering the region.

In a news release, Sacramento County said the Sacramento and American rivers are expected to run higher and faster than normal with heavy rain in the forecast.

With those concerns, Discovery Park, Howe Avenue Access and Watt Avenue Access will be closed starting Dec. 30 along the American River Parkway.

Along the Dry Creek Parkway, Dry Creek Ranch House Access, Dry Creek Parking Lot and Cherry Island Sports Park will also be closed starting Dec. 30.

The county said those areas along Dry Creek Parkway and the American River Parkway will remain closed until further notice. Officials have started notifying people in the area and are urging them to seek higher ground, the county said.

Officials expect the American River Parkway multi-use trail will have flooding from Discovery Park through Campus Commons and near mile marker 20.5. Caution is urged for those traveling through the area on bike and anyone else visiting the park.

The county said releases from Folsom Lake into the American River are expected to reach about 25,00 cubic feet per second, meaning the river will be flowing faster than usual.

Authorities are encouraging people to stay away from the American River, if possible.
