SACRAMENTO, Calif. — As a storm makes its way through the valley this Sunday, thousands of people have had to deal with power outages in Arden Arcade. High wind and rain continues to be the main concern for SMUD and PG&E as crews are ready to address major problem areas.
With this storm, Sacramento residents like Aurelia Trujillo said it's giving her flashbacks to last year's big storm.
"We actually have a boat and RV. So we're doing all we can to make sure those are secured and don't fly away and with the rain," Trujillo said.
Securing items at home is a tip PG&E encourages homeowners to do to minimize as much damage as possible when high winds are present.
"Make sure your patio furniture is either put away or secure. When we have high winds like this, we have seen stuff from the backyard flying into our power lines, even things as heavy as trampolines," said PG&E spokesperson, Megan McFarland.
When it comes to trees, SMUD said it prepares year round to minimize the risk of fallen branches.
"We do vegetation management, meaning that we want to make sure that trees and branches around infrastructure like power lines are maintained, in order to help prevent power outages on a day to day basis," said Gamaliel Ortiz, spokesperson for SMUD.
With thousands of people already experiencing power outages in Sacramento County, both SMUD and PG&E say safety is first and encourage people to not approach fallen power lines, and to call 911 immediately.
PG&E and SMUD suggest residents to keep an eye on their power outage maps and to report them when outages occur.
