SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — Sacramento Metropolitan Fire District shared dramatic new video of multiple water rescues during the New Year’s Eve storm over the weekend.
They used boats and went vehicle to vehicle to locate trapped victims near Highway 99.
For Lori Osmond, her motto is "be prepared, not scared." She's a retired Grass Valley teacher and self-defense instructor with Damsel in Defense.
“Being prepared, it’s just being ready for anything. In today’s world, we don’t know what’s going to happen. I live up in the foothills, and it is pouring," said Osmond. "We went through the fire last year, so there is just mud everywhere. You never know what you’re going to come across or who you’re going to come across, so just being prepared with safety tools for your car, your body, and your family.”
Osmond said she was devastated to hear about the multiple people who lost their lives in the recent flooding, so she has some suggested tools to keep nearby.
“We have a tool that I wish every car had. I wish every car that was sold had one of these in it. It’s a very bright flash light. It’s got a dimmer, and an SOS light," she said. "This has magnets on it so you can put it on the top of your car if you stranded, and it will flash red lights. It also has a very loud alarm, so if you were to go down an embankment, somebody can hear you. It has a razorblade to cut your seat belt off. I recommend it in the center console, and it has a spring loaded point that will shatter your car windows so that you can get out.”
With more rain and snow expected, Osmond is convinced the road trip flashlight could be a lifesaver.
"You can actually get a little charge off this on your phone. If you need to charge your phone, you could plug it into the USB part. This is a multi-use road trip flash light that I highly recommend. It will save lives,” said Osmond.
