SODA SPRINGS, California — Interstate 80 and Highway 50 in the Sierra are back open after a storm impacted drivers with, at times, heavy snow.
For some, the weather was a mess, but for others, it was a blessing.
“It is more entertaining, a little bit more danger,” said Jesus Melendez, semi-truck driver.
But for other drivers, it was a surprise.
“We thought we could beat it; we got caught all in it,” said Jonathan Richards, who was heading to Reno.
Aside from the challenging driving conditions, the ski resorts are loving the help from mother nature.
“With this snow that came in, we are excited that we might see some fresh stuff on the hill,” said Tucker Norred, with Boreal Mountain Resort.
Boreal's original opening date was Nov. 22, but with the snowfall and low temperatures allowing them to run their snowmaking operations, an earlier start could be in the cards.
“People are excited. The town is fired up to get more beds filled, and the restaurants are fired up to see a lot of travelers coming to the area,” Norred said.
Officials hope people have the right equipment for themselves and their vehicles if they are coming up. If you don't have four-wheel drive, make sure you carry chains.
