Thousands remain in the dark as another round of rain and wind approach

A SMUD spokesperson says they ordered extra materials and crews to get as many people power as possible.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Thousands of people remain in the dark Sunday night after heavy winds knocked out power across the Sacramento Municipal Utilities District.

The early morning storm knocked out power to 345,000 customers, and SMUD has restored power to all but 48,000 ahead of the next round of rain and wind.

Neighbors along 21st Avenue in South Sacramento woke up to the storm's aftermath: a street light on the ground and large trees uprooted in their driveways.

Anna Kennedy lives nearby in Sacramento's Tahoe Park area and recalls how powerful Saturday night's storm was.

"There's a whole lot of wind. We actually moved into the family room because we've got a pretty big tree right over our bedroom," said Kennedy.

Trees fell onto homes along 22nd Avenue. Crews were cutting down branches to clear the mess as another storm system, which is expected to bring more rain and wind, heads to the Sacramento region.

"I feel very fortunate that the big trees around my property are fine, and I just feel bad for all the people that their property can't stay the same," said Kennedy.

Utility crews are working into the night to restore power on 21st Avenue after neighbors say trees brought down lines.

The storm knocked out power for thousands of customers in the Lemon Hill area. High winds were enough to snap the top of a power pole and take down the lines with them, dropping power poles like dominoes.

SMUD said they expect many people to lose power again as more rain and wind hit the Sacramento area. Their infrastructure faced extensive damage throughout their service territory.

A spokesperson says they ordered extra materials and crews to get as many people power as possible.
