Power restored to thousands power in Executive Airport area amid winter storm

Tuesday, the utility company said extended outages were a "near certainty" if the more than 50 mile per hour forecast winds arrived.

SACRAMENTO COUNTY, Calif. — SMUD crews responded to another power outage in the Sacramento area which left thousands in the dark.

The unplanned outage in the Sacramento Executive Airport area temporarily left nearly 12,000 customers without power. Power has since been restored to many in the area.

The Sacramento Municipal Utilities District said the outage began around 5:05 p.m. Wednesday. It originally impacted around 11,930 customers. The outage is still being assessed, and it's not yet known when power will return.

The outage comes amid a winter storm bringing more rain and winds to communities fresh from dealing with the aftermath of a New Year's Eve winter storm that left thousands without power. Tuesday, the utility company said outages were a "near certainty" if the more than 50 mile per hour forecast winds for Wednesday arrived.

Officials said restoration efforts can be slow when winds are too high for crews to safely work in or access the area. Flooding can also impact restoration efforts.
